In my opinion, a splurge is an outfit containing at least one item that is well over the average price of a standard boutique/High Street store. Something that you would find in said store is 'sensible' (and that is only because 'sensible' is an 's' word that worked here, 'so-so' was, well so-so and nothing else came to mind that screamed 'Ms Average'. Obviously a splurge is something that costs less than what you would expect to pay in said average store. It might be on sale or it might result in an obvious quality drop - we shall see!
Black Tie Weddings are almost guaranteed to terrify - the challenge of finding an evening gown (and in my humble opinion a full length gown is required) that is flattering, not ludicrously expensive and hopefully re-wearable in the future is daunting. I've tried to use options that are relatively classic and reusable...
SPLURGE
What To Wear? Black Tie Wedding - Splurge
Many people will say black should not be worn at a wedding. Personally, I think a black evening gown is perfectly appropriate if it is accessorised appropriately for the event. This dress stood out to me as simple, yet detailed through the bodice making it more accessible for a wider variety of body shapes than the less structured strapless maxis. I've accessorised it with various textures of silver. As an aside, this clutch is one of my most used Polyvore items yet!

What To Wear To A Black Tie Wedding? Steal
I've purposefully paired the hot pink with gold. Usually hot pink will be seen with silver but I thought this made a nice, hopefully classy, change. Ladies who are not very slim, beware of these dresses, personally the strapless maxi dress makes this 5'3" hourglass look like a tent. Another issue with a strapless floor length gown is possibly matching the bridesmaids. But if you look great and won't be mistaken for the maid of honour, this is a bargain look!
